Despite her name, there was nothing particularly bland about Butch Bland. For twenty-seven years, she worked as the Director of Experiential Delight for a chain of family-owned amusement parks, where she was responsible for determining exactly how much whimsy a person could reasonably tolerate before becoming suspicious.

In 2011, Butch launched a short-lived but critically admired quarterly journal devoted entirely to unusual clouds. The publication folded after three issues when readers became distracted by the increasingly elaborate hats she wore in the editor's photographs.

She maintained an encyclopedic knowledge of carnival games, regional sodas, and forgotten pop songs that reached number thirty-eight on the charts and never appeared again. Her apartment contained six hundred vinyl records, three functioning snow-cone machines, and a framed certificate declaring her "Honorary Mayor of Tuesday."

Children adored Butch. Dogs followed her inexplicably. Several adults became convinced she possessed magical abilities after encountering her in airports.

Butch denied this repeatedly.

Still, she once predicted the arrival of an ice cream truck seventeen minutes before anyone could hear it.

No satisfactory explanation was ever provided.
