Cassandra Beaumont, known universally as Chuck, inherited the Beaumont Collection of Decorative Objects at the age of thirty-two after a distant relative disappeared during an auction in Monaco. The collection consisted of rare jewelry, questionable artifacts, and one emerald believed to have caused three engagements and a minor diplomatic incident.

For nearly two decades, Chuck worked as an Independent Provenance Investigator, tracing the histories of valuable objects that wealthy people preferred not to discuss publicly. Her reports were famously thorough, occasionally devastating, and always delivered in custom stationery.

She maintained residences in five countries but spent most of her time drifting between grand hotels, private trains, and unusually ornate libraries. No one knew exactly how wealthy she was, including Chuck herself, who once described her finances as "more atmospheric than numerical."

Among her peers, she was known for two things: an encyclopedic knowledge of forgotten aristocratic scandals and an unwavering refusal to attend events described as "networking opportunities."

People often mistook Chuck for royalty.

She never corrected them.

The confusion saved an extraordinary amount of time.
